The federal Recovery Audit Contract (RAC) program uses private auditing companies to review medical claims in all 50 states. Any provider billing fee-for-service Medicare, Medicaid, or commercial insurance is subject to audit. If auditors find coding inconsistencies, insufficient documentation, or overpayments, your practice may be required to repay those amounts plus interest. And audits can continue every 45 days until the government finds no further issues.
